Trouble with Travel: Hats

While scouring for pictures of the royal wedding in Edinburgh today I cam across this gem, which I found rather adorable.

 Get in the back, Kate!

Then I looked at it again and realized poor Katie Cambridge is hunched over due to her rather large hat (been there, Honey)!

That instantly brought to mind a satirical print from Matthew Darly in 1776 when hair heights were at their largest.  Elegant females were constantly forced to sit on the floor due to their hair; there was no other way to get around it aside from sticking your head out the window.  Here's hoping that someday we will have vehicles to accommodate fashion!

  1. I adore hats, but I don't wear them unless it's something casual. When I was young though, I wore hats often. My grandmothers came from an earlier time and hats were the finishing touch to every outfit and were to be worn. Period!

I kind of miss that now...

  2. I have a sneaking suspicion that all these hats the Duchess of Cambridge sports are going to start a trend in the States.

  3. One can only hope. I'm afraid though that our fashion "sense" if you will, is so driven by teenagers that unless it catches on with them, we won't see many hats at all. And it's such a shame.

  4. Don't you like how the duchess is always smiling? What a pleasure to see a happy woman!

  5. I agree with Katherine Louise, its very natural and pretty to see.

  6. in about 1993 I was behind a fellow with a large and very gelled mohawk (believe it's called a mohican in the UK). He had to drive with his head tilted to his shoulder. Couldn't be safe! But just goes to show you ... it's not just the women who suffer for fashion!
