I vaguely remember seeing this in a gorgeous volume about 18th century genre painting and being very confused about the symbolism of this. What are the cupids meant to represent? She can't be selling love to that lady, can she?Does anyone know more about this?
That's an amazing portrait, it's an amazing painting :)
I always assumed she was selling love to the lady. Buy a cupid, get a man? Sounds like a good marketing line!
